Organization

Peninsula Mounted Search and Rescue (PMSAR) is a professional volunteer mounted search and rescue organization.

The unit originated in Kitsap County in 1992. About 1995 we re-affiliated with Pierce County.

As the first organized equine only SAR unit in Washington State, PMSAR was instrumental in establishing the safety and training standards for mounted search and rescue in our state.

We currently have three sections in our unit. The Operations Section mans our base vehicle and provides guidance and support to the Mounted search teams. Our Scout Section is used to provide safety and ensure communications are maintained with the mounted teams in the field. The Mounted Section is the field arm of the unit this section conducts the actual search missions. Currently we have openings in all three sections.

Our meetings are held on the second Monday of the month.

Even though most of our members have and ride horses, we also have non-riding members that run our base camp. They handle
communication and coordination with the Pierce Co. Sheriff and various other units. And are important in providing support for the equine field teams.

The different member titles and responsibilities can be found in the LEVELS section of this site.

Mounted riders carry a 48 hour pack and are required by Pierce County to wear a helmet. See the EQUIPMENT section for a detailed list.

Our communication is done with ham radios, provided by the unit. A ham license, although encouraged, is not required to be a member.

All required member training is provided by the unit and its affiliates.

As a volunteer service we are funded by Company sponsorships and citizen contributions. We welcome donations from all sources.

We are currently recruiting new members. If you are interested in giving of your time and energy to gain a lot of knowledge in a very interesting, rewarding, and worthwhile endeavor; please write to us, call us, e-mail us, or just show up at one of our meetings and check us out.
