Scout Equipment
The Scout Section consists of two four wheel drive vehicles who's function is insure the safety of the mounted teams in the field and maintain communications between the mounted teams and the Operations Leader (OL). The vehicles are equipped with multiple radios, computers, GPS. At times a single team and a scout may respond to a search callout as an independent unit. The Scouts conduct a road reconnaissance prior to sending trucks and trailers up wilderness mountain roads. They note all turn around locations, search sector parking locations , snow levels and do not pass points. This information is transmitted to the OL to be included in the Mounted Teams mission briefing. Scouts have to be qualified as Operations Leaders since at times they are the only operations support a mounted team may have.
The communications equipment normally carried or HAM band VHF and UHF radios, State SAR net capable VHF, FRS/GMRS and CB radios. Both Scouts are capable of producing search maps and other necessary search documentation should a mounted team be given a mission change to another sector. The Scouts normally operate with two members per vehicle, but this is not always possible. They are also able to move horse trailers to meet the teams at new pickup points depending on mission requirements.
